DS Advocate: Our 3 year olds...what are the PROFESSIONALS thinking?? *Five Years Later....

This post was from 2010, August 17th ~ Worth a Reposting here Today! *Five Years Later....has anything changed for the better?

DS Advocate: Our 3 year olds
...what are the PROFESSIONALS thinking??

I can tell it's a week before school starts! I received several phone calls just yesterday! ALL the calls were about the same exact thing...parents being TOLD (without it yet ever being discussed in any IEP meeting!!!) ...that their little one with Down syndrome HAS just one PLACEMENT OPTION and can ONLY attend a Disability only Developmental Preschool instead of the neighborhood elementary school that is nearest to the parents home!

What is wrong with people??! I just don't get those few professionals that speak up the most at these initial eligibility and PLACEMENT meetings! The oh so prejudgemental professionals read their wonderfully word-smithed initial evaluation reports and the parents are hearing these professional 'reports' for the very first time with lots of emotions and concern. Most of the time it's these new parents to the whole ESE 'ballgame'...that really don't have a clue what is happening! Hopefully they have taken another family member, friend or better yet an experienced advocate with them.

The professional PLACEMENT TEAMS seem to think that it is only their professional opinions that matter the most when making the PLACEMENT decisions about a 3 year old youngsters FUTURE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS!! What about what the PARENTS THINK IS BEST FOR THEIR OWN CHILD???  How can anyone really know what classroom set up is really going to be BEST, especially for a little guy just turning 3 years old? THERE IS NO DATA TO SUPPORT that a little 3 year old  absolutely needs a more restrictive classroom with fewer student to teacher ratio. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL TREND AND WHAT DOES THE NATIONAL RESEARCH SAY? WHAT DO DISABILITY SPECIFIC NATIONAL EXPERTS RECOMMEND AS BEST PRACTICES?

Our PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENT TEAMS in Broward want parents to believe that it is only the PROFESSIONALS that KNOW WHAT IS BEST for their Child!!  Please....give me a break!!  From what I am being told by several parents, now that have recently taken their little ones to be evaluated... that those professionals have only met, seen and worked with their Child for maybe 10 - 15 minutes total!!!  Of course if asked they will tell everyone they took a WHOLE HALF HOUR with the Child and now they KNOW BEST for that young child!  NOT!!!  (WOW a whole 10 to sometimes maybe
30  minutes...maybe.....to do an individualized evaluation for Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapy.)

The professionals not ever thinking to consider contacting and COLLABORATING with the private family therapist these little ones have been seeing for years! The private Speech, Occupational or Physical Therapist that has been working with the little one for over 3 years and actually KNOWS the Child really well!! Yes professional Part B therapist that do evaluations on youngsters with developmental delays are professionals, but when they start only listening to themselves and not ever taking into consideration what the parents concerns and what they as the Child parents feel will be BEST. It is the PARENTS THAT ARE THE REAL EXPERTS here at this point when it comes to where they would like to have their child educated and which school and why. I'm a firm believer that it's the parents that know THEIR CHILD THE BEST.

When there are IEP TEAMS of 8 plus professionals sitting around a conference table and pretty much all of the school system side of  INITIAL PLACEMENT TEAMS have a predetermined mind set on where and how a certain child with a particular or certain kind of disability should go to school...and not one of those people speak up and SUGGEST that maybe it would be ok and fine to have this little one  attend the neighborhood school that is just a few blocks away from their parents home that actually has the 3-5 year old "disability" program (PreK ESE Programs) designed just for little kiddo's that need a little extra help in their development.

I find it very sad that NOT ONE of those professionals thought the PreK ESE classroom MIGHT be a good placement for many of our 3 year old students with DOWN SYNDROME?? First of all when they don't even provide and discuss out in the open all the classroom and program options available...that seems then like it is a systematic decision that all students with a certain type of disability, like Down syndrome for example are only to be suggested to attend certain classrooms or certain types of placement decisions are already PREDETERMINED before ever meeting with the family! THIS IS DISCRIMINATION AT ITS FINEST and yes it is happening still today....but today it's not so much about race as it is about DISABILITIES today, and it is also about certain kinds of disabilities....Plain and simple it's about DISCRIMINATION AND IT NEEDS TO STOP!!

When IEP teams pre-determine placement before the actual meeting this is when their professional opinions and their PERSONAL FEELINGS to what they think is BEST for that child or how they usually do it...their feelings and their opinions don't mean a hill-o-beans! When there isn't and hasn't been professional collaboration going with the Child's private therapists and/or the
parents and there never was....they lose their creditability as the professionals they should be respected for! Personally they loose the repect they deserve as professionals...women usually...because they don't BELIEVE IN OUR CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME!! It is obvious by the well rehearsed same ol comments they provide to parent after parent after parent.

Why is it that placement after placement of our young Children with Down syndrome between the ages of 3 to 5 years old are more likely than not....to be  recommended placement in one of several Broward County School PROVIDER DEVELOPMENTAL PRESCHOOLS? These schools are not usually near to the Childs home and most times requires a long bus ride to attend them as well. Why are these little ones being PUSHED TO ONLY BE ABLE TO ATTEND ARC, ANN STORK, UCP or Broward Children's Center? Why are these Children not being offered the PreK ESE classrooms that are at our neighborhood schools? Someone please give me the data that supports the placement at a developmental preschool only as the best placement option always for so many Children with Down syndrome especially!

OUR LITTLE CUTIES WITH DOWN SYNDROME NEED SO MUCH CLASSROOM SUPPORT ABSOLUTELY AND LOTS OF POSITIVE PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT, ESE SUPPORTS AND SERVICES!

What I heard today during the initial evaluation and placement IEP "TEAM" MEETING for a particular cutie cute and oh so yummy sweet and delicious little boy....was that this team of Broward Public Schools Initial Placement Professionals INSISTED (almost dictated!) that he attend the very developmental preschool the parents had just pulled him out from just 2 months previous! THEY SAW THINGS THEY DID NOT LIKE AND DID NOT FEEL THIS PLACE WAS DOING WHAT THEY REALLY SHOULD BE DOING FOR THEIR SON, SO THEY PULLED HIM FROM THAT SCHOOL NEVER TO HAVE HIM GO THERE EVER AGAIN! So....tell me....why would parents want their little boy to go back to a place they knew to NOT BE THE BEST PLACEMENT OPTION for him?

I am sadden that we have so much PREJUDGEMENT AND PRE-DETERMINED PLACEMENT DECISIONS without parents having any say so in what they think might be best for their Child...so much of this is happening in our Broward school district! Our youngest and most vulnerable of students are being discriminated against and it needs to stop and quick! A STATE COMPLAINT MIGHT BE THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE OUR DISTRICT WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE WITH THIS ON GOING SITUATION THAT HAPPENS TO CHILD AFTER CHILD AFTER CHILD WITH NOT JUST DOWN SYNDROME BUT OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS!

If you or someone you know has had a similar situation happen to you at your Child's Initial 3 year old placement TRANSITION IEP, please write me an email telling me your story. I want to help make a positive change and I need your help!

Email me your story: AngelKids4me@gmail.com

Most of these programs for preschoolers with disability like UCP actually have jam packed classrooms. I consider these places as "grow away programs". They are not progressive when it comes to learning. It's more of a babysitting agency. I agree that it unfair that children with Down's syndrome are forced to attend these programs. More people need to hear this because this is not right. I think if parents knew this that they would be outraged. Sorry if I offended anyone but I feel as though it has to be said. Thank you for speaking out DS Avocate.

Deerfield Beach High School Bullying and Abusive Administration

Published on~
Jul 3, 2014
This is an interaction...assault under the law...of a student by Kenneth May, Assistant Principal at DBHS. First he STEALS the chips the student pays for...assaults the student...pushing the students around, up against a wall ...then student didn't even do anything wrong enough to even WRITE up for anything Just sends the student to class. This is HIS administrative style, supported by the Broward County School board (they saw this video...that too ME two years to get MY hands on, Robert Runcie and Jon Marlow...Principal at DBHS. This is abuse and Bullying of a student in Broward schools Watch as Mr. May blocks the student then assaults him over a bag of potato chips. this is ABUSE!! If a parent did this they would go to jail. If a teacher can be charged with assault because they placed a sticker on the student.

Please keep the stories and videos coming. Together we can make Broward schools better...we MUST come together to stop the abuses against students, staff and parents.

Tax payers This is YOUR tax dollar at work and REMEMBER they want to INCREASE YOUR TAXES in Novemeber 2014 ~ Say NO.

Do not forget this is the leadership of Jon Marlow; Principal of Deerfield Beach High school. DBHS

October is National Down syndrome Awareness Month ~ My Recommendation for Broward County Public Schools

My Recommendations for Broward County Public Schools: Provide training that is ACADEMICALLY meaningful to those that will be working with students that have Down syndrome.

Our children are not lab experiments to go to school only to have LOGS & CHECK MARKS taken on them for doing every little thing pertaining to how 'they act' while in school.

If only schools staff would track what they are TEACHING ACADEMICALLY to our Children instead of looking for so much "stuff" that they (school teachers, aides, administrators) turn into and create into negative behaviors they then want to focus in on instead of teaching our kiddo's with DS.

School staff are encouraging and creating many of the negative behaviors they are tracking!!

Our children with Down syndrome need sound academic support, not negative 'data' created that only tracks every little move they do.

What about tracking and creating data that shows; WHAT ARE THEY TEACHING TO OUR CHILDREN.

Teachers and all staff working with students with Down syndrome NEED DOWN SYNDROME SPECIFIC TRAINING provided by NATIONAL EXPERTS!

Has anyone from Broward County Public Schools ever attended any Down syndrome National Conventions?

How many teachers and aides actually attend Down syndrome specific training...bet there are more teachers and staff attending and looking into Autism specific training from National experts.

Our students with Down syndrome need academic support with sound researched based practices.

Bring in National EXPERTS to TRAIN this District on, "How to teach students with Down syndrome."

Thanks ~ that would be my recommendation for Broward schools. ....especially those teaching and working with students with Down syndrome. That includes the LEA and AREA PROGRAM SPECIALISTS that attend our children's IEP meetings. THEY NEED THE TRAINING THE MOST because they are the ones CONTROLLING OUR CHILDREN'S IEP MEETINGS TODAY here in Broward County.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DOWN SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH ~ Let's do something POSITIVE for our Students and their families this month especially!!

IEP "Teams" with NO NAMES!

Great ANOTHER THING Broward ESE Department comes up with to be Parent Friendly & it certainly seems more COLLABORATIVE during the IEP PROCESS!! NOT!!

I would HOPE now with being able to NOT HAVE TO LIST the "school district" side of our parent friendly IEP Teams Via the Parent Participation Forms aka PPF's that PARENTS also will NOT HAVE TO let them know WHO WE WILL BE BRINGING!!! ....like the Newspaper reporter friend of mine or the CAMERA MAN from any number of TV STATIONS with their RECORDING NEWS CREWS!! This could be very good for parents as well cause we too wouldn't have to put OUR NAMES ON THE PPF EITHER!!

Well this just goes to show how COMBATIVE & UNCOOPERATIVE it has become just to hold an IEP Meeting to ensure our children are EDUCATED!

Hmmmm.... will we be able to get PARENT SIGNATURES on our IEP's then?? That has always bothered me that Parents don't have to sign the IEP!! So now will we be able to get the signatures of ALL that attend? What about the EXCUSAL FORM? How do we excuse "NO NAME" IEP Team Member? This is such nonsense!!

Bet this was the brainchild from a corner office on the 9th floor of the KCW Building...always coming up with yet another way to BLOCK ESE PARENTS from having collaborative IEP Meetings. This may be another of a list of BEST PRACTICE POLICIES that can't be produced in writing to us.

BROWARD ESE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO STOP THE UNDER-HANDED SNEAKY NONSENSE!!

How do they go to "work" day after day collecting their paychecks just to keep on keeping on with all their nonsense they "come up with" to keep THE DOORS CLOSED TIGHT ON SO MANY ESE PARENTS-FAMILIES & STUDENTS!!?

Time 4 CHANGE! The Time is NOW!!!
Time to get rid of a FLOOR full of ESE ADMINISTRATORS &amp and some of those Nasty PROGRAM SPECIALIST!!! Most are trained to FIGHT with the Parents!! Nasty some of them are for sure!

Tell me it isn't true...that Broward ESE Department is going to get away with this......because...why...because "they can~!!?"

24 min/ 8 sec IEP Hostile Take-Over ~ Broward ESE Dept. NONSENSE

Should I post my 24min/8sec iPhone recording of the Hostile take over of my daughter's 5/30/12 IEP on FB?

I'm having a tad bit-o-trouble here in Broward schools.

My daughter Mariah Elizabeth doesn't even know that bad people attend IEP meetings that don't care about her.....they call themselves PROFESSIONALS!

......I'll say!
.....this WAS a Professional job that's for sure!

Parents are NOT GETTING NOTIFIED or INFORMED of SAF / SAC / PTO meetings! ~ If there IS A SAF at all!!

School Advisory Forums aka SAF was put into place for a reason...to be the LINK between PARENTS & the School, District & State things going on.

Today I don't think our PARENTS are being informed of much lately....and all we hear today is all about PARENT INVOLVEMENT!

How the heck can parents get involved in their Child's school and education when Parents are not getting meeting notices with enough time to make PLANS TO ATTEND the meeting or event?

I know that PRINTING anything and putting into our Children's Backpack is THE NOTICE OF LAST RESORT ~ paper & printing costs prevent paper flyers going home in backpacks anymore! There are lots of other ways to LET PARENTS KNOW in advance of upcoming meetings and dates to put on their calendars, so babysitters can be set-up and plans to attend are on the parents schedule to attend.

I am the SAF CHAIR at my daughters school and it has had its BUMPS-IN-THE-ROAD (literally!!) just setting up our FIRST REAL SAF~School Advisory Forum MEETING!! Informing Parents & the Community of upcoming SAF meetings should be a priority today more than ever! Parent Involvement is the big BUZZ word everyone is talking about today!

I drove by my daughters school on Friday morning....there was nothing listed on the outdoor school sign about the upcoming SAF / SAC / PTO meeting that was coming up that upcoming Monday evening at 6PM. This could have been done over the weekend, so those driving by the school over the weekend could see the announcement on the school sign and BE AWARE of the upcoming SAF / SAC / PTO PARENT INVOLVEMENT MEETINGS happening at our school on Monday! How is putting the information on the outdoor sign at 11AM the morning of the 6PM evening meeting really giving parents notice and time to make plans to attend good? That is giving 7 HOURS NOTICE...if the parents even see or look at the sign within that small window of time... 7 HOURS...PLaahZeee....really.... 7 hours before the meeting that evening?

No 1/4 page or 1/2 sheet note came home in my daughters backpack....I did see a note on the Cafeteria door on Friday during the Fall Festival...but what about those that didn't attend the Fall Festival....

While I was at my daughters Tutoring lesson, I received a PARENT-LINK call at 5:25PM ~ A HALF HOUR BEFORE THE SAF / SAC / PTO MEETING!!

Really....a HALF-HOUR NOTICE parents get an auto-caller INFORMING PARENTS of a meeting in a half hour? WOW!! Thanks for the call!!

Our school has a Facebook page...I saw that close to 7:45PM on Sunday the day before the meetings a post was put on FB...what about the families that don't have internet? How are ALL families being notified of PARENT MEETINGS at your school?

I do believe something DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT HAS TO BE DONE and something different needs to take place...at least at my daughters school....since I have first had knowledge how SITE BASE MANAGEMENT is being handled and how parents are not being notified of upcoming SAF meetings. I know there are many schools that don't even have SAF meetings, because they don't have a SAF CHAIR. SAF is the Parent Voice and the LINK for communication between school and district things going on.

SITE BASED MANAGEMENT IS THE PROBLEM with many of our schools. Schools are SHUTTING OUT PARENTS ON PURPOSE!! Especially the Special Needs Parents & Families......we have no voice...and certainly the ESE Parent Voice means nothing to those that could actually HELP with better SITE BASED MANAGEMENT ISSUES & CONCERNS from Parents!

I can't keep silent any longer about the SITE BASED MANAGEMENT ISSUES that is a common mode of operation now in place at many of our Broward County Schools!

Our New Superintendent, Robert Runcie is doing LISTENING TOURS throughout the Land-of-Broward....hope he's listening! Hope he cares...really cares about those that have no voice....students with very unique learning challenges and their parents caring for them!

THE ONLY THING THAT IS CONSTANT IS CHANGE!

Broward schools need to CHANGE how they Partner with Parents ~ how they INFORM PARENTS & make Parents Feel Welcomed back on our Children's Schools!

Parent Volunteers are just that....PARENTS...and that includes PARENTS of Special Needs! Let's stop the nonsense and start INCLUDING our Special Needs Parents as Partners in Education!

Shhh! School ADVISORY FORUMS~Why are they soo QUIET? "Parent Involvment"

School Advisory Forums aka SAF ~ Why are they sooo QUIET? "Parent Involvment"

How can we have PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT today when the BASIC PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT LINKAGE between our Children's Home School and the Area of the County they live in and the different PARENT LED Advisory Councils are NOT Working Together for the Common Goal of providing "WHO" these Parents Are at our Individual Schools?

When a parent asks, "Who is my SAF Chair person?" at their school and administration or the principal doesn't give that parent an answer, because they say they don't know or they will find out and get back the them about it. After several emails coming from the parent asking again and again sometimes 2 and 3 times and never being provided with the SAF persons name and contact information. Still the parent that WANTS TO GET INVOLVED or IS ALREADY  INVOLVED is many times not being provided with any contact information on "Who is the SAF person at my school?"

WHAT IS THE BIG SECRET about this SAF STUFF??

At individual schools Parents are not always notified of upcoming school happenings, like the PTA/PTO, SAC, SAF meetings. Parents have to almost get lucky they saw something or many times it's another parent they hear things from. Notification of the different Area meetings and the different Programs and District meetings are not usually talked about or encouraged to get involved in from our neighborhood schools. Why is that?  For the most part parents are being provided minimal time to receive upcoming meeting times & location information.

What is needed is some form of WHAT'S GOING ON in our District to allow parents a way to pick and choose from all the meetings. Maybe this is already in place, via many different avenues and the media. At our Child's schools do ALL parents have access to information, so they can at least be provided the ability to Choose to attend upcoming, meetings, trainings and fun events.

Where is our one stop shop for Information via a Public Schools NEWS channel for Parents? I know we have BEACON TV...but do ALL Parents know what it is? ...or have access to it? If not, then how else are we providing information to parents?

Parents today are feeling more and more that our schools are off limits to Parents. Drop em off at the door and parents don't cross the line......during the day our Children belong to the 'educational system"......Parent Involvement ends there.....they bring them to school and can't go on school grounds anymore.

How can there ever be parent involvement when the entire school system doesn't welcome us? The FEW of us that are still out there everyday trying to create and do right by all of us.....are FED UP! I'm FED UP with the Nonsense that goes on so often around here!

I WANT US ALL TO TAKE OUR SCHOOLS BACK!
GET INVOLVED IN EDUCATION & STAY INVOLVED!
Our Future Generation Depend on Us to Get Involved Today!

 It's about our COMMUNITY
